Often used in blues, swing and jazz contexts, George Thorogood built his sound around the tone of these guitars. Having said this, there are a lot worse guitars out there, and as well as being historically important, the 1820 bass can certainly provide the goods when required.Mahogany neck with unbound rosewood fingerboard. Over the course of the 70s, the Japanese output improved dramatically, and in many ways these early 70s models are a low point for the brand. These new Epiphones were based on existing Matsumoku guitars, sharing body shapes, and hardware, but the Epiphone line was somewhat upgraded, with inlaid logos and a 2x2 peghead configuration. The Matsumoku factory had been producing guitars for export for some time, but the 1820 bass (alongside a number of guitar models and the 5120 electric acoustic bass) were the first Epiphone models to be made there. I was very impressed (and surprised) with how good this guitar sounded when recorded, I had never considered a 3/4 size guitar before.

The March 1958 Gibson electric guitars and amplifiers catalog featured the following guitars. 1958 Gibson ES-345 Prototype Serial A29915. The newer models don't appear until the back cover. The first half of this catalog contains high-end and student electric acoustics, solid bodies and bass guitars. This was, of course, the first catalog to widely illustrate the use of the Gibson Humbuckers that had been introduced the previous year. Several new models were shipped for the first time, models that have gone on to be classics that define the Gibson brand: the Flying V, Explorer and ES-335TD, aswell as models that didn't quite make it, but are still revered in Gibson folklore, such as the Moderne and Explorer bass. 1958 was an important and innovative year for Gibson.
